America in the Great Depression and World War II
This is a library of congress stockpile of real photos from
Americans' lives. Search the gallery or browse it; look at
black and white photos or color.
- Illustrators'
portfolios
This website holds portfolios to more artists than you can
sort through. One of my favorites, for example, is
Anne Wilson, who illustrated one of our daughter's
favorite children's books. Click on the search button on the
left side for help looking through everything.
- Wild Photoshop
Creations
Here is the site where I find so many of the amazingly
manipulated photographs I show in class. This is artistry
with a computer.
-
National Geographic's Picture of the Day
Who better to go to for interesting pictures than National
Geographic? If you've got an artistic eye and enjoy
photography, look here for inspiration.
- Pictures from
the News
One of the weaknesses of Internet news is you cannot see all
the pictures you see in your newspaper. The Chicago Tribune
lets you peek at many of the great pictures through their
"Photos of the Day" section. Look for the link on the left
center of the page.
- Flickr
This is the web's premier site for regular people to share
photos. You can search for particular types of pictures, or
do what I do - click on the explore Flickr, last 7 days link
and see what interesting things people have been doing with
cameras lately. You may find your own favorite photographer
- I've enjoyed photos from
Rod Graves,
a random fellow I saw in my explorations.

particular photographers continually post their prints

- GOSU Photography
Jason Strachan takes pictures
mostly of the landscape in South Africa. He has a unique
style, usually shooting with black and white or subtle
color.
- Mexican
Pictures
I love Latino culture, and these pictures capture it well in
Mexico. Raul Gutierrez is the photographer.

- Thesaurus.com
Use this site for the synonym/antonym homework I give.
You'll find it more helpful than Word's quick-reference
thesaurus.
-
Dictionary.com
I like this dictionary best when it comes to on-line
dictionaries. If you aren't sure how to pronounce the word,
you can listen to it, and this site has less distraction on
the page than other dictionary sites.

Poetry Memorizer
Use this web site to help you memorize those 75 words of
poetry. You'll need your poem to be typed to stick it into
the text box.
- A Poem a Day
Billy Collins, the former U.S. Poet Laureate created
this list, and if you're looking for great poetry on the
web, I'd recommend you start here.
- American Academy of
Poets
This website is so large it's overwhelming. If you're
looking to browse, peek at the Poets and Poetry dropdown
menu on the upper left side of the page. Then look for a
particular author or poem and poke around. It takes time to
enjoy it truly.
- Writer's Almanac
Produced as a radio piece by Garrison Keillor, this is a
great place to learn bite sized bits about artists and
writers.
- Listening to
Poetry
This is my favorite part of the American Academy of Poets
page linked above. It proves conclusively that poets
consider sound an integral part of their art form.
Highlights for me include Dylan Thomas, Robert Frost, and
Langston Hughes.
- Listening to the Greats
You can hear Ogden Nash here, and if you're looking for
something unique, listen to
Benjamin
Zephaniah. The Alfred, Lord Tennyson recording is from 1880!

There are many sources on the web for quotes, but this is

Easy Bib
This website helps you do the formatting to your works
cited. All you have to do is plug in the correct
information. Beware - finding the correct information is
often the hardest part! I advise you to use this site
especially for internet resources.
-
Source List Guidelines
This page has easy links to the particular type of source
you're trying to cite. It is helpful and well organized.
-
MLA Examples
This site has lots of examples and
not too much explanation.
-
LEO MLA Documentation
Look to the bottom of this page for
help - you can click on the specific type of source for
which you need help.
Comic strips
- Baby Blues
As a dad, I give this strip my hearty approval.
- Fox Trot
I feel like we can all relate to some member of the Fox
family. It is interesting that I used to relate best to the
older brother, but now I find myself relating to the dad.
I'm getting OLD!
-
Boondocks
My brother turned me on to this strip. It is more aware of
political events than many daily funnies, but I appreciate
those silly perspectives on the oddities of life. Note that
you can scroll down further on this page and see a wealth of
comic strips through

- Yahoo
explanation
Here's an answer if you've been wondering what blogging is.
-
Milt's File
This is an example of a blog that I have read for years. It
is a more traditional blog, not the online journal that
we've experimented with in our class. It also focuses on
current events and academic topics - definitely not food for
everyone's palette.

- Grammar Bytes
In a way, these are like those tests
everyone has to take, but they're more fun - and with
this, you can see the answers!
- Brain
teasers
NPR plays a radio show called
Car Talk,
and the hosts challenge listeners with The Puzzler every
week. Some of these can hurt your brain, but when you figure
them out, O! The joy! Dig in the archives if you have a
taste for more.
- Eyespot
This site is the next big thing as far as I'm concerned.
Like YouTube, it's a place for you to store, edit, and share
digital videos you've shot with your phone, digital camera,
or camcorder. I use it to share videos of our kids with my
family. Try it out, you may find yourself as addicted as I
am.

Have you ever seen those motivational signs with the
pretty picture and the inspirational sayings?
One company has cashed in by creating parodies of those
posters, and you can see them all.
